Potty Training- Day One- Kid three- Act One

It is both a bright, and gloomy day in our household, as I realize that I now must begin the task of potty training my last child. Since up until this point, I have been relatively successful with the potty training task, I thought I would share my journey through training the first….BOY!

(Dun Dun Dunnnnnnnnnnnn)

I am interested if my plan of action that was so successful with the girls will work the same with my son!

My Potty Training Rules

1. We do NOT believe in Pull-Ups or the like

I find that when we’ve used pull-ups or a similar training pant, both of my girls knew in their mindthat this was just a diaper and didn’t feel it necessary to change their habits because it pulled up differently. They KNEW they were not “big girl” pants. It is kind-of like quitting cold turkey. If you know you have a fall back you are less likely to succeed.

2. Drink as much as he wants until 7 PM- then NOTHING

A small bladder is just that. A SMALL bladder. The child stands no chance of waking up dry if there is no room in their body for the liquid you allow them to have. Be tough, and make the older kids follow suit.

3. Whether or not you believe the child HAS to go potty, the first available OVER 6 year old MUST take him upon request

They are smart and we know it. Chances are that very quickly, your little one will learn that you jump for them when they mention a potty, and will use that against you. When they want to get out of a chair, down from dinner, or any other occasion that they would like to watch you jump like a puppet and entertain them. You will be tempted to say, “I know you don’t have to go- you just want to get down!” but don’t do it! Let them know that the potty IS something to be taken seriously!

4. Scheduled trips to the potty to sit a moment every twenty minutes

Get in the habit and eventually, just by odds, they will have that first “pee-pee” happen in the right location. Once they “break the seal” so to speak, and the rewards start to happen, the training begins!

5. Candy for pee-pee TOY for poopie

The dreaded number two has always been our tough point. I had one daughter hold it for a week because she was scared to go, and the other daughter flat out refused and did her business the second she got OFF the potty every time. We increase the prize for difficulty and frequency, so where as some m&m’s will do the trick for a tinkle, a $10 trip to Chuck-E-Cheese might be in order for a number two if it is hard for them!

6. This lasts two weeks WITH a diaper.
Then the diaper goes bye-bye and we prepare for 5 days of accidents

There has to be a point that you cut the cord and just let go. You’ve put in your time and training, and hopefully by now there are more hits than misses during the day. Just by letting go, and letting them know that you are not going to have a diaper any more, so it is time to step it up, they WILL eventually step it up. There will be messes, and underpants that you will just throw away. They will not like the feeling of both NOT being a big girl or boy, and the squishy pants. We accomplished in a week of messes, what took months with pull-ups.
Plan to go through 10 pair of underpants each day and 1 plastic pant each day at bed-time

So the question is….

Will this tried and true method work on a boy? Day one down, I’ll keep you updated on days 2-7!
